Junior Hedge Fund Software Engineer
New York, NY
$120,000 - $150,000
Launch your fintech career at this well-established, 150 person, $20B+ hedge fund where engineering isn't a cost center off to the side. It's where a good chunk of the firm's senior leadership started. This is a seat on a small, senior-led team embedded directly with portfolio managers, traders, and quants, not tucked behind a ticket queue.
The Setup
Established credit, mortgage, and fixed income shop with a three decade track record.
Real Python and AI work now: unstructured data, LLM workflows, internal tooling that didn't exist two years ago.
This isn't a pure AI or quant role. It's business first: your work has to hold up under a trader's or PM's scrutiny.
Core systems run on .NET/C#/SQL Server, mature and not going anywhere. Some of today's on-prem infrastructure is already scoped to move to the cloud, and you'd help build that.
The CTO came up through the engineering ranks and still stays close to the dev team.
What You'd Own
A real hand in the AI buildout: LLMs and AI workflows in internal tools, research pipelines, and dev tooling itself, including document extraction for credit underwriting forms, one of the team's first concrete use cases.
Deployment tooling so traders and other business users can ship what they build with Claude and other AI coding tools, without spinning up a new Docker container every time.
Individual contributions, and over time, ownership of projects that move revenue, not just the ticket queue.
Production support on systems people depend on: signal dashboards, portfolio management, trade feeds, risk, accounting.
Modernizing existing APIs, frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines with proven patterns, not reinventing what works.
Data analysis and reconciliation that proves a system is right, not just running.
Why This One's Different
You're paired with a senior engineer from day one and in real conversations with portfolio management, research, and trading right away.
Full ownership of those relationships grows over your first year, it's not handed to you.
The firm's most senior technologists came up through this same seat, so the path to real influence isn't theoretical.
Infrastructure is old school, but the appetite for Python and AI is real and growing, and you'd build the newer half of that story.
Growth here isn't linear: engineering, research, even portfolio-adjacent paths stay open over time.
Who Fits
Recent grad through about 3 years of work experience. Internships and side projects count.
Solid computer science fundamentals: syntax, algorithms, data structures, design patterns, even without a finance background.
Comfortable with SQL and query performance, not just syntax.
Already building with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) and has real opinions on using them in production, not just a toy project.
Working knowledge of C#, JavaScript, or TypeScript. Angular or React is a plus, and you're comfortable owning front end work, not just consuming it.
Python helps but isn't required, picking it up fast is what matters.
Strong ownership instinct: you don't wait to be told exactly what to build.
Growth
Career paths here aren't linear. People have moved into research, risk, even trading-adjacent roles over time
Advancement comes from real contribution and business impact, not tenure
